We cannot deny that Dubai is a record-breaker in terms of man-made islands like Palm Jumeirah, Deira Island, Palm Jebel Ali and The World.

But among these islands, one of them is still empty and inhabited and That is THE WORLD ISLANDS.

The World Islands are an assortment of 300 luxurious man-made islands moulded into the ‘countries’ of the world.

The making of the island began in 2003 and stopped in 2008 because of the financial crisis. Though 70% of the islands were sold to private developers in 2008, an improvement on the majority of the islands still failed to start.

Developer Nakheel said that 70 per cent of the islands had been sold – however, the development has to stop and the resort-to-be turned into an apparition town.

There were just so many difficulties that happened concerning he Islands but Nakheel Properties, The World’s developer, still didn’t give up and continued developing the Islands.

But almost 2 decades have passed but The World is still empty? Why is this? Let’s dive right to it!

#1. It was sinking
The sand beneath the islands was gradually sinking in the ocean from where it originally was constructed.

“The islands are gradually falling into the ocean, the evidence showed erosion and deterioration of the globe islands”,” said Richard Wilmot-Smith QC, for Penguin Marine.

And who would even want to do measurements in a very place that is considered environmentally harmful?

#2. It was a complete failure.

The islands were supposed to be finished by 2008 but since it faced so many difficulties, the development needed to be called to a halt. And many people were talking about that The World Island might have been a complete failure and the developer should stop developing it.

After spending billions of dollars on a project, would you even dare to give up?

Nakheel Properties is just so competent and persistent about finishing this project and hoping that one day, it will already be livable and habited.

#3. Pricey

Although the island is as pricey as expected, it’s pricey to the point that if you consider yourself living at the Island for the rest of your life, you should have at least a billion dollars to live on.

#4. Too far from the Mainland
The main methods of transportation between the islands will is by marine or air transport. You cannot just drive into the water whenever you want to go to and from the mainland.

And who will move into another country or Island just to isolate themselves on an island? Well I’m sure there may be a few out there, who knows?

#5. It is unfinished.

Almost 20 years have passed but The World Islands remain unfinished. However, the development is still on the making and certain ‘countries’ were done but not all of them are finished yet. So we’ll keep on hoping for the best!

Now, these are the 5 reasons why The World Island remain empty and inhabited, #1 It was reported sinking and can be environmentally harmful, #2 It was a complete failure. Was it? We’ll see it after another 10 years maybe. #3, It’s a bit pricey if you’re not a multibillionaire. #4 You cannot easily access the mainland and lastly, #5 it is still unfinished.
