In a fast paced city like Dubai, it can be hard to keep up with all the city’s happenings. Which is why we’re bringing you the week in review: a short, digestible overview of the weeks biggest news announcements, trending stories and top happenings.

Whether it’s Salt Bae teasing of his new burger bar to a speed limit increase on a key Dubai road, here are the five top stories from Dubai this week.

Dry night announced for early April

Dubai authorities have confirmed there’s going to be a dry night in Dubai at the start of April. A circular issued to hotels and restaurants across the city, the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) advised that licensed venues must refrain from serving alcohol as of 6pm on Tuesday April 2 until 7pm on Wednesday April 3.

But does this mean a public holiday? It doesn’t look likely. Until this year, on the occasion of Isra and Mi’raj, observed on the 27th day of Rajab, UAE residents were typically given a day off. However, earlier this year the UAE government confirmed that the public and private sectors would receive the same amount of public holidays for the first time ever.

The UK is currently due to leave the bloc on March 29, but MPs have twice rejected the PM's divorce deal with the EU.

The satellite will be named ‘813’ because this was the year Al Ma’mun, the seventh Abbasid caliph came to power over a large collective of Arab states known as the Abbasid Caliphate. His powerbase, centred in Baghdad, became a renowned centre of...

Across the Gulf region, states are vying to build ever grander museums and towers from the world’s most famous architects. But this display of soft power masks deeper ethical concerns

On the Doha corniche, on the route into the city from its airport, a monumental pile of fibre-cement discs is nearing completion. It is the new National Museum of Qatar, where the country’s “cultural heritage, diverse history and modern developments” are to be displayed. It will, says its silver-tongued Parisian architect Jean Nouvel, “symbolise the mysteries of the desert’s concretions and crystallisations, suggesting the interlocking pattern of the blade-like petals of the desert rose”. It does indeed look like the clusters of sandy crystals that go by that name.

This is the same Jean Nouvel whose outpost of the Louvre opened last year in Abu Dhabi, which for now is one of Qatar’s enemies. He also designed the 238-metre Burj Doha, completed in 2012, which is from the same genre of anatomically suggestive towers as his Torre Glòries in Barcelona and Norman Foster’s Gherkin in London. The burj is the most memorable building in an instant downtown called West Bay, an extravagantly variegated constellation of vertical glass of a type now familiar from China to the Gulf to the US to London.

The wealthy dynasties who rule the Gulf states have their reasons for such huge investments

The building suggests both fortified power and a complex intelligence that may or may not be benevolent

The dilemma is that posed by China, or Azerbaijan or any number of repressive regimes: is it better to avoid or engage?

Human rights group warns case of Ellie Holman, who accepted alcohol offered by Emirates, is symptomatic of confused UAE laws

A woman who was detained in Dubai with her four-year-old daughter after drinking a complimentary glass of wine on a flight from London has expressed her relief after she was cleared by authorities and allowed to return home.

Ellie Holman, a dentist originally from Sweden who lives in Sevenoaks, Kent, with her husband and three children, had been facing a year in detention while awaiting a court hearing after she was arrested on 13 July having drunk one glass of wine on her eight-hour Emirates flight to Dubai.

It is impossible to know whether this post at Al-Emirati.com on the victims of the recent Air India disaster is intended to be some appalling attempt at humour or satire, but by every single measure it is absolutely beyond the pale:

Not really. Not only do I not care if the victims "rest in peace" but it seems to me that they are, rather, resting in pieces!

I am of course talking about flight IX 812 from Dubai to Balglapour (or some other hell hole, they're all the same) that recently crashed (click here)

I know I know. Mean, blah blah. The way I see it is as follows. The UAE is (about) 50% Indians, Something that I, and 90% of all other Emaratis see as a bad thing.

This plane, carrying Indians who live and work here, means that 160 indians that clog up the roads, cause accidents, fail code inspections at Indian restaurants, speak like this guy, and are a general drag on the security of the UAE, wont be coming back. That is a very GOOD thing!

I can only pray that this happens every week!

Sadly, we'll probably have 160 new VISAs for 160 new Indians issued in 3 hours... And the authority in charge of this will flaunt that, as if it's a good thing.

Mocking the victims of a plane crash disaster on the grounds of their race and glorying in their tragic deaths is simply inhumane.

In fact, it is evil.

Salt Bae’s Dubai restaurant Nusr-et in Jumeirah Four Seasons packs out every night with meat-lovers eager to get a glimpse of the salt-sprinkling chef at work.

But if you can’t manage to bag a reservation at his Jumeirah restaurant, it looks like you’ll soon be able to get your hands on a Salt Bae burger, which looks like it might be coming soon to DIFC.

Taking to Instagram, the Turkish-born chef shared a series of Instagram stories with his 20 million followers appearing to sign the lease on a brand new restaurant.

“Saltbae burger will be opening soon in DIFC Dubai. Signatures are done” he wrote on the first post.

He finished the string of posts by thanking the DIFC team, and the hashtag #saltbae burger.

So, will Salt Bae call his burger joint #saltbae burger? Where in DIFC will the restaurant open? And, will it attract as many celebrities as his Four Seasons restaurant?

Nusr-et Dubai has been frequented by stars including Paul Pogba, Rio Ferdinand, DJ Snake and Leonardo DiCaprio and even Vice President of the UAE and Dubai ruler HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has been seen dining at the famous hotspot.

Only time will tell, but we can’t wait to hear more.

The Founding Father’s Exhibition explores the process of traditional photography, while showing an effusive display of rare and significant historic moments in the UAE, a country founded by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

Celebrating the story of the UAE through one man’s lens, Ramesh Shukla’s presentation takes you on a historic journey, detailing the art of photography through large-scale prints, video and a display of his collection of original photography equipment and film negatives.

His most notable photograph is of the UAE rulers standing in front of the UAE flag after having signed the Federation Agreement in 1971.

It was this photo that would be the inspiration for the symbol of the ‘Spirit of the Union’ which is now celebrated across the country. Describing his destiny and his presence in the UAE as being in ‘the right place at the right time’, this was just one of the moments that was captured through the lens of Ramesh Shukla.

You can also find Shukla’s photos in numerous prominent venues across the UAE, including in governmental offices and Dubai’s metro stations.

The exhibition also marks the launch of the photographer’s new book published by Motivate Media Group, titled The United Arab Emirates: Founding Fathers – Zayed and Rashid.

The book pays homage to the UAE’s founding fathers with photographs of exceptional moments in history – a lovely souvenir you can take home with you and a perfect coffee-table book.

The exhibition is open until April 7, 2019 and is open to the general public. Tickets cost Dhs25 for adults, Dhs10 for children under 25 and under 5s enter free.
